What is the Vakaros System?
In simple terms, Vakaros devices are advanced electronics with built-in GPS that can replace traditional compass/timer setups. They can provide detailed data, including:
- Position
- Velocity
- Heading
- Heel and pitch angles
- Distance-to-line and time-to-line
- Time-to-burn
- Data logging
One standout feature is the electronic start line calling, also known as RaceSense. This system allows units to communicate with each other, so race committee units can provide information directly to your boat, including:
- Marking the start line
- Automatically starting your timer
- Indicating if you are over the starting line (OCS)
World Sailing (WS) has granted the Etchells Class a resolution, valid until May 30, 2025, allows event organizers to include in their NOR an exemption to Class Rule C.5.1(b), allowing the use of electronics. This includes allowing the Race Committee to use electronics to manage the starting process and starting line. Etchells fleets around the world have been using this exemption to test out the Vakaros Atlas2 and the RaceSense starting system.
Who else uses this system?
Many fleets are moving in the direction of electronics calling the starting line. VX Ones, Melges 24, Melges 15, J/70, IC37 and the Star Class, to name a few. It’s becoming very popular in big fleets with long starting lines. It makes calling the line almost instantaneous and virtually eliminates the need for general recalls or starting under any other preparatory flag other than a P flag. Many competitors say this levels the playing field on the starting line in large fleets. Race officers who are very familiar with the Vakaros RaceSense system appreciate the ease and timely manner races are started, without unnecessary starting penalties and general recalls.
From Mark Foster, “The J/70 Class put in that Vakaros RaceSense would be used at their regattas and they could either rent a unit or buy one, but they had to have one for the event. Vakaros did offer a discount for people buying units for a specific event.”
Where Has It Been Used?
The full Vakaros system was successfully deployed at the 2025 Worlds and is currently being used during Miami’s Biscayne Bay Series, where feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s strong speculation that the class will vote this fall to permanently allow the system.
Why do we need this system?
The exemption period was requested by a number of IGC members at the request of their fleets. The IGC agreed that testing technology such as RaceSense was a good idea and is considering a proposing a permanent Class Rule change. If the rules are changed, and electronics are allowed, it is likely that the IGC will use such a system at World Championships and member national authorities that oversee the administration of other events (national and continental championships, for example) will approve the use of these systems at their events as well. Two key factors that make this rule change attractive: there’s no more wasted time over general recalls and start penalties and every start will be under the P flag.
From Vince Brun, “I think that the Vakaros is an instrument that will greatly help the performance of the average sailors, by helping them know the distance to the line (particularly on long starting lines), together with heading and speed. I remember a few years back when we all used the old magnetic compasses, and the electronic compass was being introduced. I clearly remember the sailors having the exact same hesitation and concerns. The electronic compass helped everyone on being accurate on picking a wind shift, but I firmly believe that the ones that gained the most from it was the average sailors that had a difficult time reading these old compasses.”
What are the key advantages of using these units?
The event organizers can decide what level of functionality they want to use.
If the RC is not planning on using RaceSense, the units can still be used as a compass. Until May 30, 2025, the functionality that is allowed MUST be specified in the event NOR. This includes whether the Race Committee plans on using RaceSense.
Can I use my Vakaros even if the Race Committee isn’t using RaceSense?
Until May 30, 2025, if the NOR does not specify a rule change, you can use the unit as a compass, timer, and shift prompt. If the RC is planning on using Vakaros RaceSense, all entries must have a unit.
How much does a unit cost? Can I rent one?
Current costs of the units:
- Vakaros Atlas 2: $1,200
- Subscription fee: $150/year or $50/month
- Etchells-specific bracket: $140
Rentals may be available, that is up to the OA.
From Mark Foster, “The return on investment is hard to measure, but just sitting out one race the first weekend should pay for the unit.”
How difficult is it to install and where should we install it on the boat?
The Vakaros mounts on a plate on the mast, above the vang tang.
When would the full system be used (what events)? At the moment, they expect the fully functional system to be used at a world championship. There is discussion to have a class vote that would allow the full functionality at all events. Regardless, the NoR will say what Vakaros options the RC will be utilizing (none, some, all).
What If Atlas 2 Is Out of Stock? Should I Buy an Edge Instead?
I would recommended waiting for the Atlas 2. The Edge model lacks several features, and it would be disappointing if the class adopts features that the Edge doesn’t support. Vakaros has assured that all North American Championship participants will have access to a unit, so even if your order is delayed, a rental option will be available.
